Stewart Gemmill
Painter & Author
Hi, my name is Stewart Gemmill. For most of my adult life, I have used my spare time to pursue a career in writing, mostly novels. The first one took 25 years to complete though I've edited it several times since, Ha. Of course I wrote other books in between.
As for my Artwork, I have only painted 9 times since leaving school in 1981, though a 10th is underway (2026). Fortunately, I don't need to practise — it's just a gift that I never realised I had, certainly not painting in colour. I know, I know. The thing is, I barely achieved the minimum "C" pass in my O'level and Higher Art exams. Where the talent came from to paint Frank Sinatra in 1989, was as big a mystery to me as anyone else. And in all those years since, I was just too busy getting married, researching, writing, holding down a full-time conventional job, not to mention the most demanding one of all: raising a family.
My first attempt at colour painting didn't come about until 2020 (aged 57). This was after my 4th near-death experience. I decided I had to know the answer to a question that had been dogging me for decades: if I died tomorrow, could I produce a full-blown colour painting? And once again, the result left me as surprised as everyone else who saw it.
Today, I am part-retired, which has freed up a lot more quality time to focus on my vocational work as a Writer and Artist. God willing, I'll build a good legacy to leave my kids.
